Art plan's carved out

25 Aug, 2009 04:00 AM
RIDDELLS Creek Primary School is planning to commemorate its 150th year of education with the creation of a permanent sculpture.

The school community will work with Mount Macedon sculptor Charles Aquilina to craft five huge boulders into an artwork that will also feature clay tiles made by pupils.

Four boulders will represent the four different buildings at the school. A fifth boulder will represent the new school building that is expected to be constructed next year.

The individual tiles will be used to create connecting pathways that will acknowledge the names of students from the past, present and future.

A group of pupils, parents and staff members has met Mr Aquilina to brainstorm ideas for the sculpture and formalise its design.

Visual arts teacher Jenny Cowburn said the idea of the sculpture was to connect the past, present and the future.

"We're making the tiles now, but we have a lot of past students coming back to make tiles. So if anyone with a past connection to the school wants to get involved they are welcome to get in touch," she said.

"We envisage the project to be something that can be built on so that pupils that start at the school in five years will also make tiles for the pathways and add to it over time."

The school is seeking sponsors to help with the project.

Details: Jenny Cowburn, 54287277 and Sheryn Mitrevics, 54287852.
