A MOUNT Macedon developer has been given the green light to establish a food and wine hub in New Gisborne.
Macedon Ranges Council has approved a planning permit for building a tavern, two restaurants, a convenience shop, as well as redeveloping the hotel at 283 Station Street, New Gisborne.
The proposal also includes 111 car parking spaces, landscaping and the removal of three native trees.
Developer Gary Harley said New Gisborne was a perfect place for a food and wine hub because it didn't have a "soul".
"It doesn't have a town centre as such; it's a town that is separate to Gisborne, a separate hamlet, and it doesn't have a soul," he said.
"We're building a food and wine precinct for the locals and to provide an avenue for tourists to visit the centre, because New Gisborne is the gateway to the Macedon wine region.
"We wanted to build in a rural setting, we wanted to capture the rural aspect of the Macedon Ranges."
Macedon Ranges South ward councillor John Letchford said the hub would add a "cultural flavour" to New Gisborne.
