Fire Action Week starts on October 11 and will finish with a 'Prepare To Be Fire Ready day' on October 18.

The special day will be for residents to get their properties ready for the fire season by:

*Cutting grass and reducing fallen leaves and twigs.

*Clearing leaves, dead undergrowth, fallen branches and wood piles.

*Placing weather stripping around the inside of doors and windows.

*Sealing all gaps on houses where embers could enter.

*Seeking advice from their local CFA station.

*Ensuring adequate access to water supply via tank, dam, swimming pool or reserves.

*Placing firescreens over windows to prevent glass cracking.

*Installing a sprinkler system around the home.

This bushfire season, now only 28 days away, is predicted to be one of Victoria's worst with the Macedon Ranges identified as one of the highest risk areas in the state.

Mayor John Letchford said it was vital residents started preparing now.

"The majority of land at risk in the populated areas of our shire is private property, which means that individuals and households have a major role in the fire preparation effort."

Macedon Ranges Council will extend its free disposal of green waste service at Woodend, Romsey and Kyneton transfer stations from October 1 to December 31.

The council will also undertake fire hazard inspections and issue clean-up notices.
