A message to beat the blues

A message to beat the blues

29 Sep, 2009 04:00 AM
BEYONDBLUE, the national depression initiative, promotes awareness of depression and anxiety through a partnership with community-based men's sheds.

beyondblue chief executive Leonie Young said the organisation had been working to support the national men's shed project for the past three years.

It has developed a Men's Shed Kit. About 300 of the kits have been sent out to men's sheds across Australia.

The kits include information about the signs and symptoms of depression, a DVD featuring rural men talking about their experiences, useful help-line numbers and websites, and a self-help book called Taking Care of Yourself and Your Family.

Ms Young said beyondblue was delighted to be partnering with men's sheds. "In the past, men have spoken at barbecues and other places about footy and what happened at work, but have been reluctant to talk about men's health and depression," she said.

Men's sheds are being encouraged to order a free shed kit.
